Beshear says McConnell health updates needed as questions continue over senator's communication

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear said Saturday he has not had any direct communication from Sen. Mitch McConnell as questions continue surrounding the longtime Kentucky senator's health and ability to return to his duties.

Beshear said he has not received a letter, email, phone call or video message from McConnell. He added that some of McConnell's colleagues in Washington have also expressed concerns about the lack of communication.

The governor said he hopes McConnell makes a full recovery, but believes some public outreach from the senator could help address growing speculation.

Beshear suggested a brief video update or a short call with a news organization could reassure Kentuckians while allowing McConnell to maintain some privacy.

"Public officials do give up some of their privacy," Beshear said, while acknowledging the senator's right to recover.

McConnell, who has represented Kentucky in the U.S. Senate since 1985, spent about a month hospitalized, according to Beshear. The governor said a lengthy hospitalization raises questions about whether a public official is ready to resume the responsibilities of office.

Beshear also addressed false reports that circulated claiming McConnell had died. The governor said he heard the reports from two separate sources but confirmed they were not true.

McConnell later released a public message, which Beshear said was a timely update and appreciated.

The governor emphasized his support for McConnell's recovery while calling for more transparency to help ease concerns among Kentuckians and lawmakers.
